Pelosi takes a hit (along with Murtha), Hoyer takes the vote

Maryland's Steny Hoyer beat out Pelosi's buddy John Murtha 149-86 in the vote for House Majority Leader.

Considering that Murtha had been telling the world he had the votes, apparently he didn't or couldn't hold them.

Hoyer, considered a "moderate" Democrat by some, liberal by others, was certainly not anywhere near as liberal as Murtha (or Pelosi).  Hoyer also doesn't bring the old Abscam baggage that Murtha does, and isn't known as someone that basically would sell out anyone or anything if it would potentially bring home more pork for his constituents.

While I still would have hoped that the GOP could hold the House, and really don't like the idea of "Speaker Pelosi", I suppose having Hoyer hold the #2 position is about as good as we could have hoped for.

By the way, I'm sure that losing this vote will do absolutely nothing to shut Murtha up at all, and it'll also probably do nothing to squelch the liberal side of the Democrat party.  They'll still get plenty of face time on the TV, and plenty of time and space in old media.  They'll probably also have gotten some bones from Hoyer in exchange for their votes.  Not as much as Murtha might have given away, but plenty.

If she's serious about cleaning up the congress, she couldn't have sided with Murtha. He's an open advocate of these sleezy backroom deals, and excuses about everything that would bring favor on a legislator's home state. This is actually a good thing for her IF she's really serious.

About as serious as a clown nose.

This vote did not surprise me.  The unanimous vote to Elect her Speaker did.  I guess all those moderates that were elected are laughing at the naive voters who voted them in.

and so it starts, the democrats cannot agree with eachother, how are they going to act on bi-partisanship.

So far working with President bush means,  NO to John Bolton even if he has done some remarkable work at the U.N.

NO to extensions of the Bush tax cuts.

No, to staying and winning in Iraq.. they already are talking about redeployment {read cut and run}

Yup, she wants this to be "the most open, honest and ethical congress in history"... yet the House will be run by a Congresswoman who only turned down a bribe by saying "maybe later", and the Senate will be run by a man with close ties to organized crime and has a habit of getting pork that improves his real estate holdings.

Yeah, the "swamp" is sure looking different now. ;~D

Dont forget her Union Busting, and channelling plum contracts to her husbands firms.

Oops, correction.. It isn't Pelosi herself who only turned down a bribe by saying "maybe later", it was Murtha, her choice for House Majority Leader.
