I agree there are still many great people on here I have a lot of respect for. I mentioned the most popular threads, by reply count. I am a GCII addict and come here several times a day and the two threads have been at or near the top for a while now. One of them died only to be resurrected as this one gained strength. Alas, I am here to judge noone, but I'm probably not the only one to notice that the ones egging such things on are a relatively small number of the same people. Now I seem to be asking for it

Marc, absolutly admirable and amazing. You've always seemed so mature for someone so young. But to have overcome such adversity, I don't really know what to say.

DethAdder, I absolutely agree. I think this is what I've been trying to say for quite some time as well.

I see different valid points of view every which way I look. I see very complex stories and yet I'm only seeing the tip of the iceberg. I see goodness and evil and every shade of gray in between. I see people essentially baring glimpses into their souls. Who's right and who's wrong? I can’t answer these questions. I don’t really know who could. When you get right down to it these aren’t very fun topics to discuss.

What happened to whether or not it’s better to play as the Torian or the Drath? Should your first build be a factory or a market? Is it better to use fleets with large numbers of small hulled ships or fewer numbers of large hulled ships? These are questions I can answer and discuss and talk about. These are topics that are fun to talk about and don’t make people mad at each other.

This is a game site. It’s not a get in touch with your feelings site. It’s not dedicated to the solution of the worlds problems. It’s a game. It should be fun. But this has become not fun. That’s why I don’t like these threads.

I said it before, and I'll say it again - I wish the Off-Topic discussions were excluded from the Recent Posts listing. I think that's the sole reason why these few active nasty threads risk giving newcomers a bad impression. If they were tucked away out of sight in the Off-Topic forum, then that would be one thing. Unfortunately, however, they're mixed in with the game-related posts on the post listing that greets users when they first come here.

It would be like shoving the people that like these into the basement as 2nd class citizens which is a bit distasteful to me but the discord these things spawn is distasteful to me as well.

In this case it's probably closer to a farting contest rather than belching.   

On the more serious side, perhaps this is a solution to what I think is a problem. I'd like to hear more people weigh in on the issue both pro and con. In reality, I'm not absolutly sure which way I would vote, though it's clear I lean towards banning these threads to the basement. But then again, I like a lot of the folks that seem to like these threads.

I dont like to add to the debate over the spelling moaners, but if they continuously carry on then i would like to see them warned and eventually banned from these forums. Their constant whining is becoming a drain in these forums. Enough of a drain that i and a lot of other people now can not be bothered to post on a regular basis as unsurprisingly one of these moaning idiots jumps in and moans over every single spelling mistake in a post.

Guys grow up and give people a little understanding. not everyone spells every word correctly and if you dont like this i would suggest you head off to a different forum and complain there as your constant moaning here has grown way too thin for the rest of us.
I dont like to see a witch hunt but if you guys dont shut up and stop your constant moaning i for one am going to lead a petition to the Dev's to ban you from these forums for the greater good of the forums. People that constantly provide no positive comments to a thread and instead go out of their way to destroy that thread have no place in these, or any, forums!

Guys you know who you are and i plead with you to stop destroying the threads with your negative comments. All you succeed in doing is driving people away from the topics and ruin a good community spirit.

Locking this topic is not sufficient. The next one will simply sprout shortly. These types of threads have been locked and the topic and conversation merely shifts to the next thread. The problem has nothing to do with the title of the original post. It isn't even really about spelling and grammar. It's about people that enjoy arguing.

I think the solution has to accept the realities of forum life as they've been demonstrated. The fact that these things come up over and over again points out the fact that they must satisfy some need. To say, lock this thread and don't ever allow another one like it, can never work because that won't satisfy the demonstrated need.

You could also say, the reason this happens is because there are a core set of people that like to argue and bash each other, let's just kick all these people off the forums. This could work but it's an awful extreme solution that casts a very wide net. I don't know if I'd really enjoy the police state that this policy may create.

I like Cauldyth's idea of sending these threads into the basement by just not listing the Off Topic posts in the recent posts list. To even see the topics you would need to specifically select the Off Topic Forum. There they would be free to fulfill the need they obviously serve, but not offend newcomers and be more easily ignored by folks who just find these threads a bother.

Providing a safe outlet for this activity may even help keep some of this type of behavior from creeping into more explicitly game related posts. Also, otherwise respected members of the community that may be closet arguers could take an occasional trip to the basement, let off some steam and not have that held against them. I think it’s a good solution to the problem.

I feel this problem needs to be addressed in it’s entirety which requires a comprehensive solution, whatever it may be. The occasional locking of threads and the temporary banning of the blatantly worst offender’s has been proven to not be sufficient.

I would like to point out that shelding new members from threads like this is hiding what the forum is realy like and it would be better that they see this and never join, than they find out about it through a flaming then leave anyway.
