Thanks Adventure-Dude

for introducing me to Smart Balance

Someone here mentioned several weeks ago that his doctor put him on an ultra-strict diet which basically took out all the tasty foods. He's restricted to fish and chicken rather than the red meats he'd always been fond of, and NO BUTTER or MARGARINE, etc. Remember him? His name isn't coming to me right now but...

While he was opining and fellow JUsers wished him the best of health and gave him courage to carry on, Adventure-Dude mentioned a couple interesting tips for him, one of which he was eager to try out: He could use garlic to season his meats & vegetables. Adventure-Dude also suggested using Smart Balance as a spread in place of butter or margarine. (Anyone else remember these threads?)

Although garlic & anything oniony has never appealed to me, I must have made a mental note of the Smart Balance tip...

Our household has been in a quandry over choosing spreads because, well, we all know that margarine is loaded with unhealthy man-made stuff, and that butter is bad for you because it's loaded with saturated fats and other scary things. But lately at home we've been using butter because we like the way we can leave it out and it spreads so smoothly. But deep down it felt so wrong.

So our last trip to the grocery store when we were in need of more spread, there it was. "Let's try Smart Balance," I said to my hubby.

I noticed that it separates in the tub, but I just stir it up with a knife every time I use it. I feel no immediate benefits, but perhaps my body is thanking me deep, deep down somewhere. I certainly have ridded myself of the guilt associated with butter & margarine.

End of random thought. Now aren't you glad I don't blog about the other million mundane thoughts that swim through my head?

P.S. It seems my last two articles have been "Thank You's." I guess it's because I'm in a rare state of actually implementing ideas that JUsers have given me, rather than just idly reading.

So my husband ought no longer find fault with my Joe User addiction. It's improving our lives

Well, that "Guy" was me, and yes, AD's advice was heaven sent to my wilting taste buds! I dont know if you caught the follow up, but my LDL was lower, so it helped. Now my Doc is griping about my calcium (Excuse me? I am 50! I need lots of calcium!).

SO now AD has 2 devoted greatful people! Me for Garlic, and you for the Smart Balance! We GOT to keep him around. Maybe kidnapping him?

Good luck with the cutting down on the nasty intakes. Another thing you might try if you want an easy out when it comes to buttery taste without the side effects, Parkay makes this spray margarine stuff that's so light and airy that there is almost no caloric content! The serving size is five sprays - enough to get my veggies tasty enough for me - and that's got a big fat 0 in the calories. (Now, if you spray like thirty times, you'll start to notice some calories.) But it's great for veggies and stuff like that.
