I'm really steaming right now. I know I just posted a few words in a short article about the baseless (to me) suit filed by the CSPI against KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken, actually their parent company: Yum Foods), but I really have to follow up a good bit here.
If you could see through my words here and get a picture of me right now, you'd see the red in my ears as I'm fuming about the idiocy and arrogance of the CSPI and other do-gooder types that are ruining the food system for all of us.
Not that I have any current proof of it, but I expect in about 20 years we'll see some serious scientific proof that the actions of the CSPI have been entirely counter to their best intentions. We'll find out that the crappy foods we used to eat, the foods that tasted great and actually had real flavor, are much better for us, much easier for our bodies to digest and process and much easier for our bodies to burn off the unneeded calories from. When we do that, will the CSPI apologize for the damage they will have done to our food system, or will they just pull an Emily Latella and try an ever so quiet "never mind."
You can guess which way I really expect things to head.
Seriously, I understand that the CSPI considers themselves our watchdogs and they want to help us take care of ourselves. Them and other similar groups have the best of intentions, and they are lobbying for change and using the court system to try to help effect it. Perhaps they are right in what they are doing, but it is entirely in the realm of possibility that their intentions are leading us all down the road to hell, or at least a hell of incredibly bland food that our bodies can't process and which cause us to bloat and expand our waste lines.
I've lived a reasonably long life, and I remember back when I could actually get a burger at McDonalds that tasted good. It was relatively fresh (actually for me it was always fresh and hot as I ordered it "plain"), juicy and enjoyable. That hasn't been the case in a long time. Partially because of the processes used at McDonalds (where they precook everything then "que" it up in a Microwave to heat it just before it's served), but also largely because the CSPI and others forced the fast food industry to move away from using beef tallow to cook their French Fries in (and partially because McDonalds switched to processes for preparing the fries that were designed to reduce the amount of oil that was soaked into the fries, both to help make them healthier and more importantly for McDonalds to help reduce the amount of oil they were using).
Food used to have taste. That's what I'll be telling my grandchildren or great grandchildren as they swallow a capsule that gives them a whole day's nutritional requirement and offers them approximately 600 calories, or whatever the desired limit will be. We'll be drinking water and nothing else because carbonated beverages will be regulated away. Never mind that perhaps they wouldn't be as bad for us if we used real sugar in them, and if we got back to somewhat reasonable portions, rather than the huge portions we have now. (Again, I don't begrudge anyone the right to drink the Super Mega Huge Gulp or whatever they want, but it's not a very wise thing to do).
Just what was wrong with the old foods that we used to eat, back at a time before "America's Waist Line Exploded"? Apparently we aren't smart enough to figure things out for ourselves, and we need the CSPI and others like them to do it for us. They'll eventually make it illegal to purchase more than a designated portion of food. Forget the "Hungry Man" dinners, those are too big. We'll have Lean Cuisine or nothing at all (actually here's a hot stock tip for everyone : buy stock in Lean Cuisine and Weight Watchers now while you can, they'll be getting rich off all of this soon!) as everything else will have been outlawed for us, even if we never asked the people that do the outlawing to speak on our behalf.
Well, I'll say it again, I've had enough of this crap. Darn you all to heck do-gooders. Stop trying to protect me, as you are failing miserably and making me miserable as you do it. You take the taste out of my food and the enjoyment out of my life. That is not your responsibility and I've not granted it to you as your right. I whole heartedly reclaim my rights to decide for myself what tastes good, and how much of it I'll eat. If I wasn't working too darned many hours in the day to make money to pay for the better foods that I do want to eat, I'd actually have time to exercise more, and you know, the prices for those better foods would probably be cheaper if idiots like the CSPI weren't helping to fatten the wallets of the lawyers in our society with these silly nuisance suits that cause the food suppliers to have to field their own army of lawyers.
It used to be "what would we have if we had nn,nnn lawyers at.... ?" it's quickly becoming "what we would have if we had nn,nnn crank scientists at....?"
