As noted in the blog article immediately below this on my blog: http://terpfan1980.joeuser.com Memorial Day is special time for me.
Typically it's a day that would find me parked in front of a TV watching movies almost non-stop. Not just any movies, but movies that are themed to the holiday. Not because I'm a warmonger or someone that derives great pleasure from violent films, but because of what the films are about. The struggles that are documented in them, the triumphs and losses, and the costs of the freedoms we have now because of the sacrifices of those that fought in many wars along the way.
Some movies (like Saving Private Ryan, as noted in prior blog article) are very tough to take. Some scenes in other movies are also hard to get through without feeling like I'm going to start bawling like a little baby. As I see scenes in these movies that show the loss of human life, of characters that are composites of soldiers of the past, I'm terribly saddened at the destruction and death that man has wrought upon fellow man.
I hope that in the not so distant future we'll find the peace that Memorial Day should inspire for all of us. For our sakes, for our childrens sakes, and for generations to come. When we do find that peace, I hope that the events we see in the films that document our past aren't forgotten, and that the sacrifices that happened are appreciated. It's the least we could do for those that have served.
