Seafoam and Smoke

I bought a new pipe yesterday

Yesterday I found a small tobacconist shop in Florence, KY. I had stopped at the mall there as many malls have a tobbaconist in them. Just my luck, this one didn't. I asked several people if they knew where one was, explaining what a tobacconist is to a few of them, but no luck as they all said they didn't know.

I guess there must be either a lot of non-smokers there or some pretty lost folks as it turns out the tobacconist shop was right across the street. It even had the word "Tobbaconist" right on the sign in great big letters.

I walked over to browse their wares and sample some of their tobacco. First thing I found was a nice pipe case I had been looking for. I then found a tobbacco that would make a nice daily smoke. Then I saw them.

There in a glass display case was a collection of meershaum pipes. Meershaum is a German word meaning seafoam which aptly describes the beautiful white mineral of which these pipes are carved. Meeershaum pipes have some unique qualities that make them highly desireable collector's pipes as well as some of the finest smokers in the world. One thing about them is that as they are smoked the oils frm the tobacco leech into the mineral and change it from white to amber to a golden brown. The trick is to not touch the meershaum with the fingers during the coloring process as the skin oils will cause the coloring to be blotchy.

I spent several minutes examining the various meers, each one more appealing than the last.

I narrowed it down to three that I really liked, totalled the purchase in my head, shook hands with reality, and settled on one.

I've smoked several bowls in the pipe now and I have to say it's the smoothest, coolest smoke I've had to date. I definately have to get a few more meers.

And they always have faces on them.  I know about Meerschaum (dont forget the C), but why do they always have faces on them?  I guess tradition.

Treat it well!  Next thing you are going to be going to Dharma for lessons in being a right proper english gentleman!

I heard smoking from a pipe is actually better (healthwise) than cigarettes, is that true or is it just a hoax for pipe smokers to enjoy it without feeling guilty? lol

Jokes aside, it's a very nice piece of art

Yeah, I always leave out that darned "c" for some reason

Actually the designs are quite varied, I suppose the faces/heads are just more popular.

The prices range from around 40 bucks to several thousand depending on the grade of the mineral, the artistic work, etc... The one I just bought was about $65. I've found a source on the net to order direct from a manufacturer for a very good price.

As meerschaum is only mined in two places in the world, a small place in Turkey, and a small place in Tanzania, it's somewhat rare. The site in Tanzania has only been discovered relatively recently. They've been making these pipes in Turkey since the early 1700s. The Turkish pipes are still the standard and most desired among collectors.

Mine's an SMS brand. Mined and carved in Turkey.

Yes, pipe smoking is healthier than cigarettes. One normally doesn't inhale pipe smoke and there are no added chemicals to deal with as in cigarettes. Even so-called "all natural" cigarettes contain nitrates in the paper. Some medical studies have shown that pipe smokers, even those who do inhale, live about as long as non-smokers.

Besides, the pipe tobacco tastes a lot better.
