Time to acknowledge the game is buggy ?

GRrrr.... "I personally have problems, and out of the tens/hundreds of thousands playing the game there are twently or so reporting crashes (80% of which are due to 50 year old drivers/bad hardware), so therefore the game itself MUST be buggy!"


similarly, "1000 people a year out of billions die falling down stairs, therefore we should all acknowledge that stairs are inherently dangerous"

Perhaps a little reflection will lead you to understand why rote repetition has fallen out of fashion as a learning modus.

Anyway, checking www.driverguide.com provides 8 hits for 'Realtek 880' as a search string, of which 5 relate to sound cards. From Optima, up to 2003 (which isn't promising) or Asustec up to January 2006. The latest is for FCC ID 0227 (which is too short, but should match the last 4 digits on the FCC ID sticker on the card if I'm barking up the right tree).

I have to ask - is this machine getting on a bit? Or made up from other parts? It certainly looks like an unusual sound device for a modern machine. Your simplest solution might be to get a cheapo Creative card to replace the sound card.

NOT that we have established the sound card as the culprit, by the way. Nevertheless, if it crashes before you've even started, I'm inclined to agree that overheating isn't the issue. I've download the most recent driver package (20Mb by the way) in case driverguide doesn't play ball with you (it's a bit pants these days). If you want the old login, or just want me to email the file (make sure your mail host allows 20Mb attachments) email me at my nick at yahoo.com

Best thing you could do, for the sound card issue at least, is to read off the FCC ID from the sticker. That's going to require, at the least, opening the case and looking in with a torch. Probably have to pull the card and read it in daylight. Take all appropriate precations

If you just want to risk it, email me and I'll give you the login or the file. Do a system restore point first. No, seriously, do the system restore thing.

And I'm doing this specifically because I get hacked off with people telling others 'update your drivers' and then not even considering that, for any of many configurations, that may be easier said than done. That's not just a pointless response, it's redundant most of the time (look up this thread). If you've nothing to add, what is the point? Your input into this thread was neither required nor useful. Spend your time elsewhere, please.

I wasn't making another 'check your drivers' post, I was expressing my dismay at yet another "*I* have a problem, tens of thousands don't, but regardless the faulty link must lie within the game rather than my software, OS, or hardware setup" post.

I bought this PC about two months ago.
The shop does put together their PC's themselves though, reducing the cost as a result.

Thanks for the link to the driverguide site (which I was not familiar with).
I'm currently downloading that 22 MB driverpackage.
We'll see if it changes anything.

Monkey Pants, nothing frustrates a gamer more than a malfunction for which he can't find a solution.

I start up a game, go through race selection and colors and such ..... and oooops............ frozen again.
How can this possibly be caused by overheating ?
I haven't even started yet.

btw, I already tried removing the cover to give more cool air to the fan.
Made no difference. The game froze like that as well.
