Rate of Fire

Simply put, how does it work? Are some weapons faster with less of a punch? Are some weapons stronger with a slower rate of fire and are some weapons just in the middle?

Seems to me that lasers = small and fast
Mass Drivers = Middle
Missles = Strong, but slow.

This accurate at all?

Nope, there's no rate of fire. The representation in the combat simulator is actually quite meaningless, but certainly cool to look at. The actual combat system is pretty basic: attacking fleet fires, defending fleet fires, attacking fleet fires, defending fleet fires, etc. . . That's really all there is to it.

they looks to fire faster because they get to the ennemy faster - just know that it isn't the case. In fact, when viewing fleet battles, you can very well set the on-screen action apart from the action report at the bottom of the screen - They might seem to match but because of the different weapon speed, they usually don't.

Basicaly the weapon's effect on the target is registered when the weapon is -fired-, not when it hits.

You do know that shields defend against lasers, armor against guns, and point defense against missiles right? So for example, if the AI has alot of laser equipted ships, design some of yours with shields. Other then this, I have not noticed any difference in weapons, so its like a rock, paper, scissors kind of thing as far as I know.

Actually it would be rock paper scissor if laser beatss missile, missile beats mass driver, and mass driver beats laser.
