Adding new techs to existing ship designs

I have several weapon and defense technologies researched (i.e. up to level 4 lasers) but still can not add any new components to my existing ship classes. The upgrade option in the shipyard is greyed out and if I select the ship itself the only option available is to upgrade it to its current build. I've been trying to figure this out for 2 evenings now. Is there a tech I'm missing that I need to have to add components? Any help greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you are trying to modify your custom hull designs? It is my understanding that you can't change the "core" designs in the shipyard.

That is correct, you can only update user designs. To do that, enter the shipyard, select the design you want to update, and click upgrade. Now you can add or deleate whatever you want (as long as you have the tech and room for it, of courese).

Ok, I don't understand completely. The core designs are the prebuilt ships? They can't be upgraded past level 1 lasers, missles, etc.? I was at war with the Yor and they had missles level 2 and I immediately researched chaff only to find out I couldn't add them to my ships. It was frustrating and the documentation is sparse in several areas. So, I have to build a completely new ship design to add new technologies? I was hoping just to play the first game without having to build new ships just to get the hang of how the game functions.

Nope you cannot upgrade the Prebuilt ships. If you don't build your own ships you have to wait until the other prebuilt ships show up.. In which case you need the tech that are needed for those new designes to show up.

Much more simple to build your own ships, Push the User Ships tab in the Starship constuction and go to work. That way you will filter out the core ships.

Yup, you have to build completly new ship designs to take advantage of a lot of the new techs. Newer ships do become available, but rarely on your schedule -- you have to research just the right techs, which often doesn't suit your needs.

I like to create base ship designs with just the eye candy but no components. I have a Star Falcon = Light Fighter, Star Hawk = Heavy Fighter, Star Eagle = Frigate, etc. with just wings and lights added. Then while playing a game, I'll load up say the Star Hawk, add weapons, defenses, an engine, and life support, then save it to say Star Hawk MkIV.
