How many of you guys on the forum are new to the Gal Civ series and have never played GC1? Please tell us how you get to know about the game and what you think of it

I think I only played the demo of GC1, heard about 2 whilst waiting around on the forums for stars SNG, which I doubt will ever be out now...
Loving the game so far Had a few initial teething problems with what to build on planets etc, but over that now thanks to the forum posts

I'm new to any GalCiv. I read a preview a while back on GameSpy for GalCiv2. I decided to check it out. My only space turn based experience before this was some MOO2, which I enjoyed. I decided to give GalCiv2 a whirl and it seems to be paying off! Well worth the money.

I'm brand spanking new to GalCiv. And it looks like I'm going to love it.

As for how I heard about it -- word of mouth. Interestingly enough, during a discussion of copy protection technologies. Someone mentioned StarDock (and this game) of avoiding draconian measures of copy protection. Not to mention having a genuine respect for their customers. A link to this website provided proof of just that.

I could think of no better way to spend my $40. Keep it up, StarDock!

Heh. I was looking to download MOO2 because my son lost my disc. I went to Home of the Underdogs to see if they had it. It was still for sale and so I bought a copy from Amazon. Meanwhile, while searching thru Underdogs for more games like MOO2, I found their review of GalCiv 1 and they had a link to the official site. From there I downloaded the GalCiv 1 demo. I was underwhelmed by it. (Sorry)

But I began to read all the info about GalCiv 2. In a few days I pre-ordered. I am very glad that I did.

As for me, although I've played Gal Civ 1 before, I guess I can be considered a noobie because I only started playing GC1 last September.

But I've actually heard about GC1 more than 2 years ago, when it first came out. Back then, I did download a demo to see if I like it, and within 10 minutes, I uninstalled the game in disgust (sorry!) because the graphics and the interface was horrible. About a year later, I gave the demo another try (because I was feeling like playing a strategy game in space) and again uninstalled it almost as soon as I discovered how ship battles were presented. Then finally last September, while searching for PC games with high artificial intelligence (AI), I heard about GC again. So this time I gave the game a final shot and just played to see how good the AI is, and I was blown off. The AI was probably the best I've seen in any game so far (and I've played a LOT of games).

I read in a journal that Brad posted a while ago that he only began to learn about computer programming around the 90's, and now he's writing all those amazing AI. Amazing, isn't it?

I am one of many who read about the game through PA. God bless you, PA.

That said, I am very lucky I have awful memory. Had I remembered where I knew the name Stardock from, I'd have never gotten itnerested in the game - I have an instance of Object Desktop (For a WoW theme I downloaded) that came packed w/ avirus (Not SD's fault, the site providing it had zipped the OD as a new file and put the virus in). Lol, so yeah, if I'd remembered that name. . . I'd've been like OH HELLS NO



As it is, I didn't realize it till today when I went in to delete the OD to amke sure that my mouse didn't even have teh ABILITY to be non-standard to stop that annoying mouse-lockup bug.

GREAT game though. SD!

im a noob. I heard about this game months ago from a forum looking for Heroa of might and magic 5. downloaded the demo of the first one a couple of weeks ago wasn't really that impressed, but the second one kicks arse.

I'm new to Galactic Civilizations, although I played the demo of GC1. I actually learned about, tried the GC1 demo and noticed the opening announcement for GC2. At that time it was for existing players only as a preview, but I have watched the game ever since then. I didn't want to beta-test, I feared that I would get bored with it, and so I waited for the release to near.

And here I am.

I had tried the GC1 demo a while ago because I read a review about the diplomacy, minor races and "universe shattering" events in it. The demo didn't impress me that much though.
Lately I went back to MOO2 and, somehow, found about GC2, thought that this time they really did it how I wanted it, and squealed at the close release date. Fastest buy ever, and oh boy am I happy with it

I bought GalCiv 1 when it came out, and tried to get into it, but for some reason, I didn't get very far. I never had any idea what I was doing.

I've had GalCiv 2 for 2 days now, and I'm already farther into it than I ever was with the first game. For some reason, this game seems a lot more accessible to me, and I've actually completed a whole game (on the easiest mode, but still.) I don't think I ever made it through a complete game in GalCiv 1.

I'm also grateful this is a game I can play on my laptop without having to lug around the CD!

I'm new.

Veteran of Star Control 1, 2, 3; MOO 1 and 2; Europa Univesalis; Civilization 1-4, Colonization and SMAC; MoM; HoMM 3 and 4; Dominions I and 2; Age of Wonders 1 and 2; Seven Kingdoms, Conquest of the New World, Settlers, Fantasy General, Stars!, Reach for the Stars, Spaceward Ho!, Ascendancy, Space Empires IV, Kohan, Total Annihilation, Warcraft 1 & 2, Starcraft, and most other well-known related games. But I never played GC1.

Right now I feel like I did when I started Laser Squad Nemesis, expecting it to be like X-COM. Is it better? Worse? Too early to tell... I eventually decided Laser Squad Nemesis was worse than X-COM (though more adrenalin-pumping), while Jagged Alliance 2 was better than X-COM. But when I started playing each (which are practically the only two games in the X-COM genre) the ultimate conclusion was not obvious. In fact, X-COM initially seemed... sort of bad, and in fact, System Shock seemed sort of bad at first, too. But eventually I realized that they are two of the greatest games ever made.

I plan to hold off on any more GC2 for a couple weeks, until most of the niggling issues are resolved. I'll reserve my judgement until then. But so far, my feelings are very positive.

Just researching...

Have a little bit of experience in turn based's, but not much. Only recently got into them... Starting to become my favorite genre, I hope. Anyways, I was doing research on games with great reviews using gamespot and gamerankings, and stumbled upon the great, though few, reviews of GalCiv 2. Thought it was the corniest name possible for a game, though it does do a good job of drawing parrelells to the Civ series though its more complex if you ask me. Anyways, despite the name, I decided it was worth my 45$'s for a download, though I did search 3(!) stores 2 of which said they had it on the web and the third for a lark. Downloading it went smoothly though... and behold. I am impressed. Though I wish my mouse's middle mouse button worked with this game, and there were more keyboard shortcuts as I use a gaming pad for most of my games.

I'm new. I never played GC1

I heard about it on slashdot. Then started lurking in the forums and was blown away by Stardock. They actually care about their customers! I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

I love the game. It's just what I was looking for. There are a few issues, but I feel confident they will be resolved.

Weird thing - I'd never heard of Stardock until I recently read about GC2, yet I live about 15 minutes away from them. In fact, they are located on Beck Road in Plymouth Michigan.....The company I work for is on Beck Road. It's great to see such a cool company end up being "locals"

I'm new to the GalCiv series, never played first one. Not completely new to space games like this though, I've had a lot of fun with Stars! and really wanted a sequel but it got canned.

Now, GalCiv2 is my Stars! 2

New to Gal Civ series

Played all of MOO series / all Civ series including CTP / EQ / EQ2 / WoW / Ulitmas 1-9 / UO / AO / KO / DAoC / all Simcity series / AD 1503 and 1602 / Empire Earth, AoC / EE2.

I find that I still like single player games quite a bit when I want to get away from the online community for a while. I LOVED Stars! mainly because of the vast amount of information available to the player and the relative ease of controlling every aspect of the game all the time. I know many didnt like the heavy text statistic base of Stars! and lack of graphics, other than triangles and lines and boxes and whatnot. But, for what it was at the time I feel it was way ahead of its time. Gal Civ 2 has the beginnings of that same feeling but I hope they dive a little deeper into some of the micromanagement... and fleet control is just a nightmare atm. Art design team did a great job.

Have played about 7 hours thus far and have been trying to figure out how to see the stats/components of previously built ships. I mean other than what it shows on the clicky screen like Beam 1 range whatever. I want to know WHAT beam weapon is on it currently so I know what to replace it with. I probably missed something there and will try again tomorrow.

personally ive never given any turn based strategy game a chance (well there was a turn based element to R:TW i suppose) but after reading an article in PC Gamer UK it sounded pretty decent and definately long lasting, (can i hear a HELL YEHA for extreme replayabiliy!??) i have definately changed my views and should be picking this game up next when i head into the the local city centre, but i dont think the game is available in the uk yet, is that true?

yeah, i just tried to reserve this spot for a semi-review when i get the game, hold on tight for it people!

Never played the first one, but always was a fan of MoO2. So turn-based space strategy is definitely close to my heart, even if I'm finding that GalCiv2 is different from MoO. It took me a while, but I think I'm getting used to that, and sort of accepting the game now.

I had the first one, but lost it without ever being able to play it.

It appears I'm having some luck with 2 judging by the cool medals it keeps giving me in the Metaverse though.

Don't ask how I can use the lowest diffculty to figure things out and break the top 25, because this, I do not know, and do not wish to know.

Im new to the series.

A few months ago I was really itching to play something in space.. I was wanting a "space opera" type game. So I went to the gamespy forums and asked people what good games are around to satiate my hunger.

They recommended a number of games... Eve.. Space Rangers..etc..etc.. So i went and checked them all out. And that is how I found this game. It had everything I wanted.....a grand scale.. lots of tech....ship design..custom races.. So for the last few months ive been on the edge of my seat waiting for it to come out so I could finally partake in a space opera

Its been everything I hoped for.

I read a lot about GC 1 and decieded it was not for me. Too simplistic compared to MOO II. I have played a little GC 2 now, and I am enjoying it immensely. A nice diversion from the excellent CIV IV

I haerd about it from the poweruser.tv podcast.. Brad kept going on and on and on about it, but I mostly thought "naah, it's not for me"... But then after I got bored and wanted a new game, I thought.. what the heck, and bought it. And so far so good...

Bragging about the game you've made over and over again does do a good job of advertisement... good work brad, wouldn't of bothered with this game if you hadn't done that
