Seven Sinly Holidays

       I hear today is valentine's day. Which brings to mind some thoughts I was having back towards christmas time. Since so many of our holidays have lost their roots and become celebrations of commercialization, why not have seven holidays, one for each of the seven deadly sins. So far I've come up with three good fits for renaming existing holidays:

Christmas becomes greed, since we have to spend as much as possible buying things for people, thus making them greedy. Sure, the people doing the buying aren't being greedy, but how many times have you seen someone upset because they didn't get enough/what they wanted?

Thanksgiving becomes gluttony. How better to describe a holiday where every man, woman and child attempts to consume three times their own body weight?

Valentine's day is lust. True, lust and love are two very different things, but one can be confused with the other easily enough. And love seems like a hard thing to market, wheras lust is marketed all the time.

       The other four I havn't come up with any existing holidays that match well with them, so I'm open to suggestions. But I've got a few ideas that sort of work, if a bit of a stretch:

Sloth can be the superbowl. While the athletes themselves are moderatly active, the rest of us sit and watch.

Pride might be the fourth of july. We're the greatest nation and all that silliness.

Envy, best I can come up with for Envy would be martin luther king day. Is rather backwards logic, but you could interpret racism to imply envy.

No good ideas for wrath. I suppose veterans day would work, barely.

       So three out of seven. The idea needs some work, but not bad for an idea to taunt messed up holidays by making them even worse

HOw about New Years day for Envy? (And I like Jythier's idea as well).

It is a time to look back on a year and see what you want to change.

Ooo, nice Envy. I'm envious.

Wrath would just be on September 11th, I think.

I liked Independence Day for pride, too.

yeh I like the idea you proposed, but.... any day that calls for any celebration would be hijacked and commercialized, such is the capitalist way.

Dr. Guy: New Years for envy would work well.
Jythier: I feel there is a better wrath day then september 11th, but it's a whole lot better then my original idea for it.
Cordelia: Three votes for the 4th, looks like that ones set.
Moderateman: That's why existing holidays would be used. Take a holiday that has already been hijacked and rehijack it to taunt the previous hijacking. Completly pointless and never catch on I'm sure, but I think it's funny.

The problem is, there really aren't too many wrath holidays. Maybe April Fool's Day?

I agree, wrath is not a common reason for having a holiday. April fools day does feel rather ironic to use for it though
